Cocaine help in Europe: the free, confidential line in your country — and what happens when you call

Every country in Europe runs a free, confidential drug helpline, and most of Europe's public health systems treat cocaine addiction at no cost to the patient. You don't need insurance paperwork, a referral, or a crisis to call. Here are the lines.

Emergency anywhere in the EU: 112 · UK: 999. Chest pain, seizures, or someone unresponsive after using — call first, ask questions later.

If your country isn't listed: the EU Drugs Agency maintains a directory of national focal points and helplines, and any GP can refer you into the public system. 112 works everywhere in the EU for emergencies.

What treatment costs (spoiler: usually nothing)

  • - UK: community drug services are free through the NHS — self-refer, no GP letter needed.
  • - France, Spain, Portugal, Italy: public addiction clinics (CSAPA, centros de atención, SerD) treat cocaine dependence free or near-free under the public system.
  • - Germany, Netherlands, Nordics: treatment is covered by statutory health insurance — your only job is the first appointment.

Cocaine has no substitution medication, so treatment is behavioural: counselling, CBT, contingency management (the best-evidenced approach), and peer groups. NA and Cocaine Anonymous hold meetings in every major European city, in English as well as local languages; SMART Recovery runs online meetings across European time zones.

The withdrawal truth

Cocaine withdrawal is not the movie version: no dangerous seizures, usually no medication needed. What it is: a crash — deep fatigue, sleep that doesn't refresh, flat or dark mood, and cravings that ambush you at exactly the time of day you used to use. It peaks in week one and fades over 2–4 weeks. The full map: What happens when you quit cocaine, day by day.

If you keep using for now

  • - Test what's in front of you — free lab checking exists in a growing list of European cities: Drug checking in Europe.
  • - Don't mix — cocaine + alcohol forms cocaethylene, measurably harder on the heart; cocaine + opioids (a "speedball") is the deadliest combination on this site: Mixing dangers.
  • - Street purity is at record highs — treat every new batch as stronger than you expect.
