Roxicodone vs Oxycodone vs Percocet: what's actually the difference?

The short answer

Roxicodone, OxyContin and Percocet all contain the same core drug: oxycodone. The differences are the release mechanism and the extra ingredients — and one of those extras is the one that quietly destroys livers.

BrandContainsReleaseWhat it means
RoxicodoneOxycodone onlyImmediate (IR)Fast onset, ~4–6 h relief; small blue 30 mg 'blues' are the most-counterfeited pill in the US
Oxycodone (generic)Oxycodone onlyIR or ER depending on tabletSame molecule as Roxicodone
OxyContinOxycodone onlyExtended (ER, 12 h)Long-acting pain relief; crushing it defeats the mechanism and is how most overdoses happen
Percocet / Roxicet / EndocetOxycodone + paracetamol (APAP)ImmediateSame opioid high + a hidden liver toxin — the dangerous one
TyloxOxycodone + APAPImmediateOlder Percocet equivalent

Why the APAP combination matters

Percocet-type products add paracetamol (acetaminophen) to the oxycodone. The paracetamol adds zero pain relief or high at recreational doses — it exists to deter abuse, because exceeding 4 g/day damages the liver.

That deterrence becomes a trap: someone taking several 'Percocet 325' tablets on top of other paracetamol-containing products (cold remedies, Tylenol) can blow past the safe limit while chasing only the oxycodone. Liver failure from APAP is the silent killer in this family — the opioid is what you feel, the paracetamol is what kills you days later.

The counterfeit's cruel twist

The DEA's testing has found most counterfeit 'Roxicodone 30s' (blue, 'M30' imprint) contain fentanyl, not oxycodone. A user who thinks they know their dose takes what is actually an unknown fentanyl dose. Naloxone reverses it — but only if someone calls 911. Never use alone: 1-800-484-3731 (US).

Is Roxicodone stronger than Percocet?

No — at equal oxycodone doses, the opioid effect is identical. What differs:

  • - Roxicodone hits faster (no waiting, no APAP), which is why it's preferred on the street and diverted harder
  • - Percocet feels 'milder' only because users typically take lower oxycodone doses per tablet (5–10 mg vs 30 mg)

Quick safety facts

  • - All are Schedule II — same legal class, same felony exposure
  • - All cause the same dependence and withdrawal — oxycodone is oxycodone
  • - Mixing any of them with alcohol or benzodiazepines multiplies the respiratory-depression risk
  • - Overdose signs are identical: pinpoint pupils, slow breathing, blue lips — naloxone works on all of them
