Cannabis + Nicotine

Cannabis + Nicotine: the short answerSpliffs, blunts, and chasing weed with vapes: the combination multiplies dependence, deepens the smoking habit, and hits the heart and lungs harder than either alone — plus nicotine's buzz can intensify THC dizziness in the moment.

Why it’s dangerous

Nicotine and THC both raise heart rate, and together they amplify each other's cardiovascular effects and dizziness ('head rush'). Mixing tobacco into cannabis or vaping alongside it also tightly links the two habits in the brain's reward system — people who mix them find both harder to quit, and the added smoke exposure compounds lung harm.

What happens

  • Stronger dizziness, light-headedness, and nausea ('the spins' at high doses)
  • Faster heart rate and palpitations
  • Reinforced dependence on both substances
  • More coughing, airway irritation, and smoke exposure

Warning signs

  • Feeling faint, pale, or sweaty after combined use
  • Racing or uncomfortable heartbeat
  • Needing both together just to feel normal

What to do

  • Sit down, breathe slowly, sip water — acute symptoms usually pass in minutes
  • Seek medical care for chest pain, fainting, or palpitations that do not settle
  • Consider keeping cannabis and nicotine as separate habits — quitting is easier when they are not fused
  • If you smoke cannabis, skipping the tobacco in joints is the single biggest harm reduction available
